Map of ratnagiri district Ratnagiri city is the district headquarter of Ratnagiri district. Ratnagiri is located on the Western coast of India, along the Arabian sea. It is located at about 375kms south of Mumbai(Bombay), on the Mumbai- Goa National highway(NH17). It is roughly in the middle of Mumbai and Panjim(Goa). Also the Kokan Railway Project has now connected Ratnagiri with rest of India. Ratnagiri has a airport. Thus it is well connected by road, railway, sea, and airways with all the major destinations in India.

The city is now shedding its sleepy village past and is now growing into a major hub of activity in the Konkan region. Growing returns from mango, cashew, and coconut cultivation is bringing in people back from the metros. Now horticulture is growing as an industry and the government is also committed to the development by giving subsidies for modern farming practices like blasting the rock for cultivation instead of digging, digging wells, providing saplings, setting up nursery, drip irrigation, and vermiculture. Intermediate cash crops like betulnut, kokum, cashew, coconut, watermelons, turbuj, chibud, cinnamon, pepper, and papaya are also adding to the per hectare returns of the farmers. Ratnagiri city is a sleepy city along the coast. It has a unique sea coast in the sense that a mountain penetrates the sea, and the colour of sand on two sides is totally different that is One beach is made of White sand whereas the other beach has complete Black sand.

Apart from mangoes the other major trade is fish. Fishing is prominent occupation along the Konkan coast.

The city is famous for other landmarks such as the LightHouse, The Fort Ratnadurg and the temple of Bhagwati on it,The Palace of King Thiba of Myanmar, Patitpawan Mandir, Bhageshwar mandir, Mirya Jetty, Bhagwati Jetty and Aquarium.

The birth place of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the man who defied the British Rule and declared in court that "Swarajya is my birthright and I will get it!" I consider my family as the blessed as Tilak was taught by my great grand father and Tilak himself taught my grandfather. It is thus a unique Guru-Shishya relation between the families of Tilak and Patwardhan. My great grandfather was in care of Bal Gangadhar Tilak in his last days in Pune.

Ratnagiri is a city where Veer Sawarkar lived. I feel proud that Vinayak Damodar alias "Tatya" Sawarkar lived in the house of my cousins and my grandfather had the blessing of Tatya.
